UTAH COUNTY, Utah — A local man got quite the scare while hiking in Slate Canyon over the weekend. Kyle Burgess, 26, was minding his own business in the Utah County wilderness around 5 p.m. The Kyle Canyon Slots Road and Trailhead is located up in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (also known as Mt. Charleston), about 30 minutes northwest of Las Vegas. From town, drive north on Highway 95 to Kyle Canyon Road (Highway 157; Table 1, Site 0667). Only one way to find out. Reserve your plot in The Retreat Graveyard, October 30 4PM-8PM #TheRetreatLV #TrickRetreat #HowDoYouRetreat. 1 hour time slots. $20 for 2 people, $30 for up to 4 people. Includes 1 pumpkin, decorating kit/goodie bags & choice of hot apple cider or hot cocoa.

The Fletcher Canyon Trail is a beautiful hike nestled in the Mt. Charleston Wilderness Area, within an hour of the Las Vegas Strip. The hike is a gradual uphill through a pine forest along a (mainly dormant) stream and ends in Fletcher Canyon, a beautiful slot canyon with 200 feet walls, water-polished rocks, and great views of Mummy Mountain. The hike is uphill but relatively easy, and is good for all levels of hikers and families too.

This video shows all of lower Sidewinder Canyon, and 6 of its slot canyons, the way it was on 3-19-2018. The hike starts at the Sidewinder Canyon parking lot. This is US 95 to Lee Canyon Road. If I am doing a Kyle Canyon Hike, up in the Spring Mountains, I will turn left on Deer Creek Road headed south to Lee Canyon Road. The windy and scenic Deer Creek Road passes a few hiking areas that I have been determined to explore. Deer Creek Trailhead (or Deer Creek Picnic Area) had been one of them.

The Fletcher Canyon Trailhead is in the Mount Charleston area, about 45 minutes from downtown Las Vegas. The drive to the trailhead is spectacular as you transition from the desert to the alpine scenery of Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

Use this trailhead address: Fletcher Canyon Trailhead, Mt Charleston, NV, 89124.

The trailhead parking is on the left shortly after you pass the intersection with Rt 158.

There is plenty of parking but it does fill up quickly on weekends.

Gear For the Hike

This is a mellow hike and you don’t need any special hiking gear here, but hiking boots will definitely help. Fitness or casual outdoor clothing will suffice in pinch. Bring at least 1L of water. In the winter there can be snow, in the summer it can get very hot (but not as hot as Vegas which is a few thousand feet below).

My Goto Hiking Footwear: La Sportiva Wildcat
If you hike a lot or just want the best (but not the most durable) hiking footwear, the Wildcat trail runner is your best move. It’s fast and light on trails, the sole gives me good grip off-trail or scrambling, and they dry quickly.

Best Budget Day Pack: REI Co-op Flash 22 Pack
Bang for the buck, you can’t go wrong with this pack. It’s super-lightweight and big enough to carry everything for a day hike, including a water bladder. Every year REI improves this pack and after a few years, it’s really solid in every way. I pack mine in a carry-on when I travel to do hikes on trips. And if you’re into ultralight backpacking, this is also a solid choice.

Stay Safe Out of Cell Phone Range
If you’re not familiar with the Garmin InReach technology, it allows you to send and receive text messages where you don’t have cell phone signals. You can also get weather reports and trigger an SOS to emergency responders. Even if you don’t have an emergency, sending a quick message telling a loved one that you’re okay or are running late is well worth the cost. The Garmin InReach Mini(REI Amazon My Review) fits in your palm and weighs next to nothing.

Here’s my complete gear list that I personally use, have tested, and recommend, updated December 2020.

How are you going to navigate this hike?
To start, you should always have a paper map and compass. And it helps to print this guide out or save it on your phone. I highly recommend a GPS as well. I use the Garmin Fenix 6 smart GPS watch (REI Amazon My Review) with maps (or the more affordable Garmin Instinct). You can also use most smartphones. Check out my navigation recommendations and resources on my top gear picks page for options at all budget levels.

Do not attempt this hike if there are thunderstorms in the forecast. Flash floods can wash down Fletcher Canyon quickly.

There can be water running in the stream depending on when you’re here. Generally it’s only in the upper reaches of the canyon/hike if at all.

End of the Trail

There is no obvious end to the official trail, as the path continues along the ravine into medium-width narrows, up a few steeper sections and past a layered, curving cliff face on the south side. The gorge narrows more soon after; now there are only stones on the floor, no vegetation, and patches of snow are likely to remain into late spring. A series of enclosed, photogenic, vertical-walled passageways lead to a chokestone followed by a major junction, where the right (north) fork becomes quickly shallow, entering open, bushy terrain, while the left fork - the tightest part of the drainage - stays confined a little way further, round a few bends, until this too looses height and changes to an open wash. Following this fork entails climbing over several large chokestones. The rocks in the slots are predominately light grey in color, crossed by vertical bands of other shades, so are quite pretty, especially in spring when contrasted with the twisting path of lingering snow along the streamway.
